Designing Attendance Policies That Scale With Your Workforce

PeopleCanvas Team14 August 20265 min read

Shifts, rosters and regularisation rules should reflect how your business actually operates — not the limits of a spreadsheet.

Attendance policy design usually fails in one of two directions: rules so loose that exceptions are handled ad hoc, or rules so rigid that managers work around them.

Start with how work happens

Document the shift patterns, locations and roles that genuinely differ. Model those, and nothing more.

Make exceptions a process

Late arrival, early departure and regularisation should follow a defined approval path with a record of who approved what.

Connect the outcome to payroll

Overtime and comp-off only work when they flow into payroll consistently. If the connection is manual, the policy will drift.

Good attendance policy is not about control. It is about predictability for employees, managers and payroll.
